One of the most wonderful surprises I have experienced in my garden has nothing to do with flowers.
It is the arrival of birds.
Over the years, I remember at least four occasions when birds came into my garden and decided to build their nests in my ficus plants. Each time, I found myself fascinated by the process. I never planned for this. I planted and cared for my ficus, enjoying their beautiful green leaves.
Then, one day, I noticed something unusual in the foliage. A few leaves looked different. They seemed to be folded or pulled together. And slowly, I realised that someone had been quietly working there. A nest made from leaves!
What amazed me most was watching how the nest gradually took shape.
Little by little, the birds brought natural materials and worked with the leaves already growing on my ficus. Some leaves were folded together, while other parts appeared to be fastened with fine plant material.
It was almost like watching a tiny craftsman at work. The nest in these photographs is a beautiful example of how resourceful birds can be. Rather than needing a ready-made structure, they use what nature provides around them.
And somehow, they manage to turn a few ordinary leaves into a safe little home. Nature’s little architects.

Every time I discovered one of these nests, I felt a mixture of excitement and curiosity.
~ How did they make it?
~ How long did it take?
~ Where did they find the materials?
And most importantly, why did they choose my garden?
Perhaps the answer is simply that the ficus provided good shelter and suitable leaves. My garden had become a peaceful enough place for them to raise their young. That thought makes me very happy.
My garden is not just a collection of plants anymore. It has become a small part of an ecosystem.
Watching without disturbing
When I discovered a nest, I tried my best not to interfere.
I would observe from a distance and take photographs whenever I had the opportunity. I didn’t want to disturb the birds or their little family.
There is something very special about knowing that, while I am busy watering plants, pruning branches, or simply enjoying my garden, another little family may be quietly living among the leaves.
Unfortunately, I have lost some of my earlier photographs when I changed phones, so I no longer have a complete record of all the nests I have seen.
But I still remember them. And fortunately, I managed to keep a few photographs.
These two are among them.
